what happens if you quit taking your insulin

Busy life. No matter how well you or someone you care for your diabetes is doing, there can be times when  insulin doses are missed or missed. While this doesn't cause an immediate emergency, it can cause blood sugar levels to spike, especially if it happens frequently. You should discuss with your diabetes health care team  what to do if you miss a dose, so you can have a plan in place.

When blood sugar is too high, you can:

 Feel hungry

 Very thirsty

 Feeling tired or exhausted

 Frequent urination

 Blurred eyes

What happens if I stop taking insulin?

There are days when you may  want to skip the shot. But skipping insulin can cause serious problems.

Without enough insulin, your blood sugar will rise. High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can make you feel unwell. This can lead to emergencies like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a condition in which your body produces an unsafe level of ketones. Ketones are natural substances that are produced when fat is  used for energy instead of sugar (because people with diabetes don't produce enough insulin on their own to  process blood sugar correctly). Too many ketones in your blood can lead to dangerous changes in blood chemistry. Skipping insulin can also lead to other problems like infections and an increased risk of long-term health problems.
