How many wings does a beetle have?

Most beetles have two pairs of wings, with the front pair of wings hardened and thickened to form protective wing-cases called elytra. The elytra cover the beetle's delicate hindwings, which are used for flying. So, technically, beetles have four wings, but only the hindwings are used for flight.
